Supported Production: ISLANDER

Supported Production: ISLANDER

Yes, yes, yes!!  Liza Birkenmeier and Katie Brook’s ISLANDER is a participant in New Georges’ Supported Productions program, in which we provide resources, mentorship and an institutional platform to affiliated artists producing their work independently — and was generated in our Audrey Residency program, too (our residency group went to a hockey game together, that was a first!). Originally scheduled for spring 2020, in summer 2021 it’s one of the first pandemic-cancelled productions back in business, and we’re so proud to be a part of it.

In ISLANDER, playwright Liza Birkenmeier and director Katie Brook (of NYT Critic’s Pick DR. RIDE’S AMERICAN BEACH HOUSE) use verbatim NHL coverage of the New York Islanders’ abysmal 2017-18 season to make a freaky comedy about white male fragility.

ISLANDER stars David Gould as Man and includes supporting performances by Dick Toth as Other Man and newcomer Aksel Latham-Mitchell as John Tavares. The creative team includes set and lighting designer Josh Smith, choreographer Katie Rose McLaughlin, and sound designer Ben Williams.

ISLANDER was developed in New Georges’ Audrey Residency program!
