we co-pro with Theater in Quarantine! Julia Izumi’s “ALL THE DIFFERENT WAYS…” premieres live 4/29!

Sure, you can still watch ALL THE DIFFERENT WAYS…
Here’s the link right here!

We’d sooooo been enjoying all the magic Theater in Quarantine (aka our friends Joshua William Gelb and KatieRose McLaughlin) had been making in a closet in the East Village (aka “the shoestring East Village company that since April 2020 has been producing marvelous live work from the 4-by-8-foot box in which Joshua William Gelb used to store his winter coats” — Jesse Green, NYTimes) … we were nothing short of ecstatic when they invited us to partner with them on a project which we’d commission.

Assignment in hand, we headed straight to current NG Audrey Resident Julia Izumi, thinking her delightfully particular theatrical mind might just do the trick

AND SO! On Thursday April 29, at 7 and 9pm, on TiQ’s YouTube page,
we welcome you to encounter

a new play by Julia Izumi
directed by KatieRose McLaughlin and Joshua William Gelb
animation by Caroline Voagen Nelson
visual and costume design by Peiyi Wong
sound design by Renee Yeoung

co-produced by New Georges and Theater in Quarantine

Join us as we investigate the many assorted ways Commodore Matthew Perry might potentially have passed from this life before famously opening Japan’s borders to trade with the Western world in 1854. Will we all be lost at sea by the end, as he never was? Tune in to find out!

THEATER IN QUARANTINE is a performance laboratory dedicated to the exploration of the live theatrical experience in the digital space. Developed in response to the pandemic by Founder/Co-Creative Director Joshua William Gelb and Co-Creative Director Katie Rose McLaughlin, TiQ has created and live streamed over 25 new, original works of performance. TiQ has worked with an array of remote collaborators (including Raja Feather Kelly, Heather Christian, Karen Olivo, and Underground Railroad Game’s Scott R. Sheppard); and partnered with The Invisible Dog, LaMaMa Experimental Theater Club, CultureHub and Theater Mitu. In their first year, TiQ has been established as one of the most consistent makers of digital performance, having been featured in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Vulture, on NPR’s All Things Considered; and reached audiences across the globe. Their work has been called “Virtuosic” by Jesse Green in the New York Times, who wrote, “The closet has produced some of the new medium’s most imaginative work.” Helen Shaw in Vulture wrote that the closet “makes confinement a virtue, a prompt to imagination.” TiQ’s full archive can be found and streamed anytime on their YouTube channel at youtube.com/theaterinquarantine.
