How’d Heidi and CREATURE enter our orbit & The Ohio? Here’s Susan:
“In 2007, the actor Heidi Schreck told me she’d written a play, well really that she was a playwright, she just hadn’t been doing the playwriting thing in New York yet, she’d been focusing on her acting career (going pretty well downtown), but anyway, would I read it? And I said, sure, I do a lot of reading in August, when I’m on vacation, send your play along and I’ll for sure read it then. So CREATURE ended up in the big big bag of plays (still the paper copy days, BIG bag, heavy bag) I’d haul off to Fire Island every year, and at some point I sat down and read it, and … wow. Scary, insightful, big characters and bigger ideas and chewy contemporary language inside a 15th-century casing. Wow. That was a play. And we did a little workshop the following spring, and started making noise about producing it, when I heard from Liz Jones at Page 73 that she’d read it, too, and we sat at the bar at Café Luxembourg, so classy, and she told me they were thinking about making Heidi their playwriting fellow, and maybe a co-pro was in order? And CREATURE, directed by Leigh Silverman, opened at the beloved Ohio Theatre on Wooster Street (our final show there, after some pretty hairy moments as Robert Lyons staved off its closing for another year!) in October 2009 to some pretty great response.” Check out this video and this video, both by then-TCG New Generations fellow Rehana Lew Mirza, for more from then!
