ENTER ARTHUR HENOCH’S 19TH-CENTURY TOWNHOUSE on a lovely Chelsea brownstone block under a sign saying “Seamen’s House” – close to the west side piers, it was once a boarding house for German seamen. From its stately front stoop through the open parlor floor (with an eclectic collection of art, books and mid-century furniture) on back to the garden, the house offers a peek into New York City lives well lived.
The basement apartment has been the studio and residence of artist Do Ho Suh for many years, inspiring him to faithfully re-create the house in his signature translucent fabric (that’s his blue stoop above!). Suh’s colorful rendering of 348 West 22nd Street, part of his “Perfect Home” series, has been exhibited around the world.
(how do we know Arthur? through his granddaughter Leah, a New Georges actor and producer! check out her HILARIOUS web series Yoga Partners here!)
